Self Storage Tips

Self storage unit and facility features Ocean Beach

  • Stack your belongings in similar-sized boxes as they will be easier to stack, with heavier items on the bottom.
  • Create room for air flow by avoiding stacking anything against the wall.
  • Lay pallets or blankets on the floor underneath your items.
  • Plan the organization of your storage unit so you can make the most of the space. A few tips for organizing: store couches upright on their side, stack chairs seat to seat, and use large items such as dressers to store things like blankets, clothing, and other small items.
  • Create a walkway down the middle of your unit to ensure you can access your things.
  • Take advantage of the unused space at the top of your unit by adding in your own shelves.
  • Label your boxes on all of their sides so you can easily see find your things. Also make sure to put frequently-used items toward the front for easier access.
  • Create more space in your unit by taking apart large items like a bed frame or table. Place any screws, washers, and smaller items in a Ziploc bag and tape them to their owner.
  • Clean out any appliances you may be storing. You will also want to leave the door ajar on refrigerators and microwaves to prevent mildew.
  • Prevent rust on items such as metal tools and bikes by rubbing a small amount of oil on them. But be careful not to get oil on anything else and store these items separately.
  • Avoid laying fragile items like mirrors and paintings flat so that they don’t become damaged. Make sure to wrap them and mark their fragility.
  • Prevent scratching on pieces of furniture by laying blankets or any cloth material over and between them.

  • Store any food items whatsoever, they will attract rodents.
  • Leave fire hazards such as paint, oil, or gasoline in your storage unit. Storing potentially hazardous and/or combustible items such as these is against the law. Also drain the gas and oil from lawnmowers, snow blowers, weed eaters, etc.
  • Use mothballs, as these will leave hard-to-remove stains on clothing.
  • Hand out your storage unit keys or access code.
  • Be afraid to ask the storage facility manager any questions you may have before or during your move-in!
